OCS 2007 R2 running on Hyper V

Hi guys,

With all the news around green IT and carbon footprint, I have been asked many times by customers about having OCS 2007 R2 in a virtual environment. The OCS 2007 release was not supported under Hyper V. Last year the communicationsserverteam blog posted that they officially support server virtualization for Office Communications Server 2007 R2. The link is here: http://communicationsserverteam.com/archive/2009/05/13/488.aspx. This is good news for green IT seeing that the R1 release was not supported in a virtual environment. Since this statement, we have done a few deployments with OCS on Hyper V and there have been no issues.
The download link to get the whitepaper is here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a45d921-3b48-44e4-b42b-19704a2b81b0&displaylang=en. The whitepaper is useful of you want to deploy Office Communications Server 2007 R2 onto Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, or onto any virtualization solution for the following workloads:
  • Presence
  • IM (including conferencing, remote access, federation, and Public IM Connectivity)
  • Group Chat
This whitepaper identifies which server roles are supported in a virtualized environment and provides guidance for scaling users and workloads in a virtualized environment.
